<p>1.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Fill out every field completely.</p>

<p>2.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Utilize every category available to you.</p>
<p>Google only requires you to use one category for your listing but will allow you to use up to five. You can get your Place Page ranked for more terms if you include the keyword phrases you are targeting in the category names.</p>
<p>Warning: Don&#8217;t take this to mean that you can stuff your categories with multiple keyword phrases. I have seen this practice done but it is dangerous and may result in penalties from Google.</p>
<p>3.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; You can add up to ten photos &#8212; add all ten!</p>
<p>Google allows you to use up to ten photos and I encourage you to use every one of them. If you really want to enhance the benefit they bring, consider uploading the images to Panoramio or Flickr and geo-tagging the images with your business address.</p>
<p>4.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; You&#8217;re allotted five videos &#8212; don&#8217;t forget to use them too.</p>
<p>Yes, it&#8217;s a bit harder to create videos than it is photos, but this is actually good news. How, you ask?</p>
<p>Well, you&#8217;ll find that many businesses don&#8217;t include a video in their listing and those that do rarely add all five. As I said in tip #1, the more complete your listing is, the easier it is to rank well for the terms you&#8217;re targeting.</p>
<p>5.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Build as many citations as possible.</p>
<p>A citation is an online reference for your business and services. Google uses them to validate that your business truly exists and that it offers the type of services you list on your Places page.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s extremely important that your citations closely match the information found on your Places page.&nbsp; As you can control the citations you create, it&#8217;s best if the information matches your Places Page information EXACTLY!</p>
<p>You can create your own citations at directories like the Yellow Pages, Super Pages, CitySearch, Insider Pages, Yahoo Local, Localize and a number of others.</p>

<p>In truth, the exact opposite is true. Most web designers know very little about SEO and this includes those with college degrees in Website Design.</p>
<p>A friend of mine received a Bachelor&#8217;s Degree in Web Design from a reputable University. When I asked her what she was taught concerning SEO she replied&#8230; &quot;Not much.&quot;</p>
<p>They gave her their definition and spent a little time explaining the basic concepts. However, they weren&#8217;t actually trained in the art and science we call SEO. They were told that work should be performed by an individual/company that specialized in Search Engine Optimization.</p>
<p>I agree with this, as web designers are &quot;artsy&quot; by nature and not best suited to things that are highly technical. That&#8217;s not to say that there aren&#8217;t some who are good at both, just that it&#8217;s probably the exception rather than the rule.</p>
<p>The real problem is that most clients know little about the web design process and mistakenly believe that their web designer has optimized their site for the search engines. As many web designers forget to discuss the topic with their clients, the site is put live without being optimized.</p>
<p>To improve your chances of getting a beautiful website that is well-optimized for the search engines, it&#8217;s important you understand these three factors:</p>
<p>Web Design</p>
<p>In this phase, your web designer will work with you to create a nice looking website according to your project specifications. This part is primarily graphic in nature but it does form the foundation of the entire project.</p>
<p>Website Coding</p>
<p>After the website graphics are finished, the design will be coded such that it can be understood and displayed by browsers like Firefox, Internet Explorer, etc. Some web designers will use a program like Adobe&#8217;s Dreamweaver to code the design while others will hire a web coder to do the process manually.</p>
<p>As a general rule, designs that are &quot;hand coded&quot; by a code specialist are more likely to follow the standards set by the Worldwide Web Consortium (aka W3C). They are also more likely to be &quot;lighter&quot; in their design, which is beneficial to SEO.</p>
<p>Search Engine Optimization</p>
<p>After the site has been designed and coded, the work can begin to optimize the website for the search engines. This is best performed by a SEO Specialist.</p>
<p>The SEO Specialist&#8217;s job is to work closely with the client in an effort to understand their business and what outcome(s) they are looking to produce. With this information, the will begin the process of keyword selection and set about optimizing each page of the site.</p>
<p>In addition to the work performed to the site itself, the SEO Specialist will perform a variety of &quot;off page&quot; tasks. These tasks may include linkbuilding, social bookmarking, the creation of citations as well as many others.</p>
<p>As you can see, successful web design is a rather complex topic and frequently requires the work of several specialists. Armed with this information, you&#8217;ll know what questions to ask to ensure your project is completed to your satisfaction.</p>
<p>After all, a beautiful website that receives little visitors won&#8217;t help you achieve much in the way of new business.</p>

<p>While the search engines use many factors to determine where to &quot;rank&quot; each page in their indexes, none are more important than the presence of &quot;anchor text&quot; links pointing to your site.</p>
<p>Anchor text links (also called &quot;text links,&quot; &quot;hypertext links,&quot; &quot;backlinks&quot; etc.) are simply pieces of text that are linked to a particular page on your website. Each link is seen as a &quot;vote&quot; by the search engines and they use them to determine where to rank your page for the &quot;linked&quot; terms.</p>
<p>If the search engines don&#8217;t find any links, they make the assumption that no one really cares about the content found on your page. Of course, this assumption really isn&#8217;t fair as it&nbsp; takes some time for a brand new page to acquire links naturally but that is the assumption they make.</p>
<p>So in order to speed the process up and help the search engines index your pages for the keyword phrases you&#8217;ve chosen during research, you have to build some anchor text links yourself.<br />
This can be accomplished a variety of ways but buying links, or building them through article marketing, video marketing or online press release submission are some of the fastest methods.</p>

As I mentioned in a prior article, you can expect between 1 and 10 percent of visitors to make a purchase on their initial visit to your website (conversion rate) and between 10 and 33 percent to give you their email address (signup rate). Often visitors weren&rsquo;t intending to buy any product but were after more information on your subject. Studies show it often takes 7 communications before a customer will buy a product. Believe me, after selling websites, it&rsquo;s very rare to get a &lsquo;yes&rsquo; on the first visit. Websites can be quite complex so maybe it&rsquo;s not the best example but people just need more information and confidence before they&rsquo;re ready to buy.</p>
<p>We need to offer the customer an awesome product that they simply can&rsquo;t say no to for them to give us their email. Often people have no intention of handing out their&nbsp; email address but a careful planned report or mini-course that is instantly delivered to them is often incentive enough for them to build that bridge.</p>
<p>The method of collecting email addresses is called an autoresponder. That is,&nbsp; a database that stores names and email addresses and can send out pre-programmed email addresses to recipients. These can be customised and sent instantly, 1 day, 5 days and anywhere up to 10 years after the initial email was collected. Very powerful and effective. Third party autoresponders that sit on a separate server are the most effective and you can generate your own signup form to place on your website.</p>
<p>You can also send an email to your database at any time. Let&rsquo;s look at an example of the power of an email database. Let&rsquo;s say you attract 200 visitors each day (easily possible) and have a signup rate of 15%, so that&rsquo;s 30 email addresses a day, and after a year you have 10 950. If you mailout a promotion for a course you have created that costs $97 and just 3% of your list signs up (quite reasonable), that&rsquo;s an income of $31 864.50 just from one mailout. This profit is realised over a few days and a great example of the power of a distribution list and a value-adding product. So make sure you ask for that email address. Our goal is to add value for our customers so we need to work out what information will be useful to them and make it available. The easiest way to do that is via email.</p>
